Through BBC Radio Manchester’s £10m Job Hunt, the National Careers Service has been supporting those in the city region whose jobs have been impacted by COVID-19 by offering them advice and guidance on the station’s morning show. One such caller was Anna, who was surprised with a mock interview live on air!

After working in the fashion industry for 11 years, Anna was made redundant due to COVID-19. After some thought, she decided to look for something new that would fit around her childcare commitments and applied for a role as a Postperson with Royal Mail.

When Anna heard that she had secured an interview, she was understandably nervous as this was her first interview in over a decade, so she called BBC Radio Manchester for support. Live on air, the presenter staged a mock interview which Anna found challenging. The presenter then introduced Anna to adviser Louise Park, who gave her some tips and support on how to prepare.

Off the air, Anna had a full session with Louise to get her fully prepared and confident for her interview. As a result, Anna was successful in securing the role.

Anna says, “I feel that I would have struggled with the interview if I had not had help from the National Careers Service. I didn’t realise how underprepared I was and as a result of the help received, I was a lot more prepared and confident.

“My adviser was fantastic, she was knowledgeable, patient, articulate and helpful. She gave me very good pointers as to the research/info to prepare for my interview as well as the STAR technique and practicing with me.

“I mention the National Careers Service to everyone who I speak with. My adviser had a wealth of knowledge and had a lot of information which might be difficult to obtain if you didn’t know where to look.”
