Employment Legal Advice Service Celebrates Volunteers at Manchester Event

Earlier this week, legal professionals heard first hand about the positive effect their work is having across Greater Manchester.

Around 40 or so gathered at The Ivy Spinningfields Brasserie in Manchester city centre at a special event hosted by the Employment Legal Advice Service, which helps the region’s residents access free employment-related legal support.

The Growth Company’s Managing Director of Employment, Health and Justice, Michelle Leeson, opened the session by explaining how the service is transforming lives thanks to the generosity of volunteer legal experts. She told the room that the initiative has so far processed over 1,000 referrals and delivers more than 50 hours of advice every month.

Attendees also heard from Laura Darnley, Partner at Ward Hadaway, who gave a detailed keynote presentation on the government’s proposed Employment Rights Bill and what it could mean for both employees and employers.

Finally, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham addressed the audience, emphasising how the service complements Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s wider priorities, including the Good Employment Charter and Live Well, both of which aim to create fairer workplaces and more equally distribute the benefits of economic growth.
