  • Job support can help people boost their skills, update their CV, and look for jobs.
  • Health and wellbeing support aims to help people manage and recover from various health conditions.

Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people across the UK are eager to work or switch roles but often don’t know where to begin.

For some, long-term health conditions make working a challenge. Others care for children or family members and worry that recent welfare reforms might affect their ability to balance these responsibilities with work. Still more want to make a change but are concerned about the potential impact on their finances.

There are as many stories as there are people. Whatever yours might be, it’s important to know that support is available.

The Growth Company offers a wide range of services in Greater Manchester that can improve your health and wellbeing, enhance your skills, and help you stay in, return to, or find work. All of our programmes are delivered locally by friendly, supportive teams and are tailored to meet individual circumstances and needs.

We understand that enrolling on a support programme can be daunting, especially when you are concerned about how it might affect your current situation. To be clear, our Working Well programmes are entirely voluntary. Participating in them will not affect your benefits and you won’t be sanctioned if you choose not to engage.

When you join one of our programmes, we’ll ask for your consent to ensure that you are fully informed and comfortable with the available support.

Our main goal is to create a safe and secure environment where you feel supported.

Job Support

Finding a new job or moving companies can be difficult at the best of times, especially when you’re dealing with other issues in your life.

Our services can point you in the right direction, helping you enrol on training courses, update your CV, apply for jobs, prepare for interviews, and even get access to any equipment you might need, like a computer or a push bike.

Our teams offer personalised guidance, working closely with you to figure out your strengths, tackle any skills gaps, and support you through the job search process and hopefully in the first few months of your new role.

Success story: Bibian joined the Working Well: Support to Succeed programme last year, shortly after moving to Greater Manchester from Hong Kong. With the help of her keyworker, she soon secured a job in a call centre, successfully passing her probation. The programme provided Bibian with job search assistance and interview support and helped her settle into life in the UK.

Health and Wellbeing

That said, sometimes it doesn’t make sense to jump straight into the job market.

We all know that physical and mental health can have a big effect on your ability and motivation to find or remain in work.

Our health and wellbeing initiatives offer community-based support to help you manage and recover from all sorts of health conditions. This includes specific support for neurodivergent people, people suffering from mental ill health, people struggling with substance dependency, and people with disabilities.

These programmes have broad aims – boosting your confidence, aiding your recovery, encouraging employers to make workplace adjustments – but they’re all designed to work with you to achieve your personal and professional goals.

Success story: After an 18-month period of unemployment, Kevin sought help to rebuild his confidence and self-esteem, signing up to a health and wellbeing support programme. With the encouragement of his keyworker, Kevin attended several workshops, before finding a volunteering role through Salford CVS, helping elderly people to use technology. This role has improved Kevin's confidence and allowed him to use his existing skills in a meaningful way.
