  • Jobs For Hongkongers provides employment support to Hong Kong BN(O) nationals in the North of England through a dedicated website and advice service.
  • The programme works with local employers that have committed to offering good job opportunities in a supportive environment.
  • Earlier this month, two GC staff members were invited to 10 Downing Street to celebrate the Lunar New Year and promote the initiative.

Growth Company employees visited 10 Downing Street in February to mark the Lunar New Year.

Phoebe Leung and Mandira Hughes represented the Jobs For Hongkongers programme at a government event which included an introduction by chancellor Jeremy Hunt.

Jobs For Hongkongers supports Hong Kong BN(O) nationals into sustained employment via a dedicated website and advice service.

Since it was launched in the summer of 2023, the programme has provided guidance and information to dozens of participants from across the North of England, helping them with everything from CV writing to English language skills.

Positive Response

Reflecting on the experience, Phoebe said: “I had an amazing time. It was incredible to see all the Lunar New Year decorations adorning the building.

“The pictures of past Prime Ministers in the hallway made me think about the history of the place and how different cultures come together there.

“The lion dance was exciting, and I also enjoyed many delicious oriental cuisines.”

Phoebe even got to meet the street’s most admired and well-known resident: “One of the highlights was meeting Larry the cat, who was having an evening walk just outside the building.”

More importantly, there was an opportunity to promote Jobs For Hongkongers during the event, as Phoebe explained: “It was great to catch up with different Hongkongers and hear their stories.

“It was truly heartwarming to witness the positive response and support for this initiative, making Hongkongers feel even more welcome and appreciated.

“Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's speech welcoming us, including the BN(O) residents, further reinforced the importance of such initiatives and made me feel genuinely proud to be a part of it all.

She added: “There are currently over a hundred people receiving support through the initiative and more businesses are getting involved to create a more inclusive environment and help migrants breaking through the barriers they face."
